Phase-angle control is mandatory for any load that includes a transformer. Switching a transformer on in zero-cross mode can cause severe inrush currents and saturation due to magnetic remanence. Phase-angle firing with delayed turn-on (soft start) gradually builds the magnetic flux and avoids destructive current peaks.
