Soft start gradually increases the firing angle (or conduction time) from zero to the setpoint over a programmable ramp time. This limits inrush current when heating elements are cold (low resistance) and prevents mechanical or thermal shock to the load. It is especially critical for transformer-coupled loads and short-wave infrared lamps.
